Who We Are
First Baptist Church was started in 1939, and over the years, generations, and changing culture, we have remained committed to God’s Word.
We are all sinners saved by Grace, and any boasting of our own goodness is excluded. The only goodness worth celebrating is that of Jesus Christ. We are all nothing without him. We are learning what it means to love God and love others. We are imperfect people with a perfect God transforming us by his amazing grace.
What We are Like
We are a church of about 80-100 people. We are just normal people from all kinds of different backgrounds and ethnicities. We are a blend of farmers, factory workers, business men & women, retired, law enforcement, and professionals. In general we are not very fancy. Some folks like to wear "Sunday dress," but most people dress on the casual side. Because we are normal people like you, we have our good times and our bad times. The most important thing you need to know about us is that we are being transformed by God's grace. God is changing us, and making us better people. Not a single one of us has anything to brag about. It is all about what God has done, is doing, and will do for us.
Our goal is to make God the center of our worship. That means we endeavor to remove things that distract from this focus, and we are looking for ways to help people turn their attention on God alone. During our worship time, there is prayer, singing, Scripture reading, solos, and choir numbers. Our church people are from a variety of backgrounds. Some are mostly familiar with modern contemporary songs. Others are used to the old traditional hymns. Our services are a blend of contemporary and traditional music styles. In one service we will sing a contemporary song like 10,000 Reasons and a traditional hymn like How Great Thou Art. We use a variety of instruments: Piano, Guitar, Flute, Tamborine, Ukulele, etc.
The "baptist" name has meant different things to different folks through out the years. In fact, when our church started in 1939, the "baptist" label was chosen primarily because of its identification with belief in the Bible. There are a set of "baptistic" beliefs that our church holds to (i.e. the most obvious is that we baptize by immersion). Your background may be brethren, mennonite, presbyterian, lutheran, methodist, etc. However, the most important thing to us is the core Bible-truths. We endeavor not to make a big fuss about minor denominational & doctrinal differences in favor of helping us all live out the core teaching God has given us. What we don't want is for people to misunderstand what "baptist" means. Since 1939, the baptist label has had some hard times in some places. Depending on where you are from or what type of baptist churches you have encountered, you may have experienced that baptist label in a negative way. All we ask is that you give us a chance to show you that we love God, we love people, and we stand on core Bible truths.
We are blessed to be a multi-generatonal church. We have toddlers on up through people in their 90s. It is important for us to live out the first several verses of Ephesians 4 as we interact as a multi-generational church. People from different generations have different music styles, pressures, reference points, leadership styles, ways of handling money & resources, etc. We work hard to be a multi-generational church that blends well.
